Travel-Safe Tech: Holiday Device Security Tips for Busy Teams

The holiday season is a busy time for business owners, executives, and employees on the move. Whether you’re traveling to visit family or flying out for a year-end conference, one thing often gets overlooked: device security.

Business laptops, tablets, and smartphones hold sensitive company data—email access, files, saved passwords, client information, and sometimes direct access to cloud systems. Unfortunately, airports, hotels, cafés, and transit hubs are also some of the most common places cybercriminals target.

Here’s how to stay safe while traveling this season:

1) Never Use Public Wi-Fi Without Protection

Public Wi-Fi is convenient—but it’s also a goldmine for attackers. Cybercriminals may set up fake hotspots (like “Airport_Free_WiFi”) or intercept traffic to steal logins and data.

  • Use a VPN to encrypt your connection.
If your organization doesn’t have a VPN solution in place, Sure Systems can recommend and help deploy the right option.

2) Turn On Full-Disk Encryption

If a device is lost or stolen, encryption helps ensure your data can’t be accessed.

  • Confirm encryption is enabled before you travel—many organizations discover too late it wasn’t turned on.

3) Use “Travel Mode” in Your Password Manager

Many password managers including Keeper Security can temporarily hide or restrict specific vaults while traveling, especially useful for international trips.

  • This minimizes what’s exposed during border checks or unexpected access requests.

4) Avoid Public Charging Stations (“Juice Jacking”)

Malicious charging ports or cables can be used to extract data or install malware when you plug in.

To stay safe:

  • Use a USB data blocker, or
  • Charge only with your own wall adapter and a power bank

5) Enable Remote Wipe & Device Tracking

If a device goes missing, the ability to locate it and quickly wipe it is critical.

  • Make sure your team knows how to trigger these features before they leave.

6) Keep Your Screen Locked—Always

Many breaches happen because someone walked away from an unlocked device.

Enable:

  • Auto-lock after 30–60 seconds
  • Strong PIN or biometric authentication
  • Lock screen notification previews off (especially email)

7) Bring Only What You Need

The less you take, the less you risk. Before traveling, ask:

  • Do I really need this laptop?
  • Can I bring a travel-only device instead?
  • Should sensitive files be temporarily removed?

Minimal exposure = maximum safety.

Holiday travel doesn’t need to create unnecessary cybersecurity risk. With a few proactive steps, you can protect your devices, your data, and your organization’s reputation.
